Trying Out New Gear - Night Photography

My sister over at Lap Dog Knits celebrated a birthday recently and one of her gifts was a tripod.  So wanting to take it for a spin, we dashed off to take some night photos of downtown Fullerton.  Check out her blog for some great shots!

Same photo as above, using a filter in Photoshop called 'glowing edge'.  Groovy, baby!

Night shot inside the courtyard at Villa Del Sol in Fullerton
Looking east... Fullerton rooftops, Harbor Blvd.
Close crop of sign from above photo... not sure where the flare came from!?
Old wooden door opening to Harbor Blvd., with light streaks from cars.
Abstract photo of my photography partner / sister!
There were some spotlights in the area producing these strange light spots in the sky.  Linking to Skywatch Friday.  Have a great weekend!

  1. Tripods are wonderful things - if I ever use them ;)

  2. Wow, these photos are awesome! One day I might get a tripod but now with just a point a shoot it wouldn't make the expense worthwhile. Your camera makes the expenditure sensible and the results are more than worth it.

  5. Hi there - I like the way that a tripod forces you to slow down when you are taking pictures. Unless there is a need for speed, slow always seems better for pictures.

    Nice set of images.

  8. I like the "Groovy Baby" shot. I like the way even the edges of the "25" speed limits on the street are highlighted. Thanks, Austin Powers. :-)

Also, it looks like the building that you call "Villa del Sol" says "California." Maybe you have discovered the "Hotel California" from the Eagle's song "Welcome to the Hotel California"! Cool, man.

  10. Nice night shots. I like having a tripod, but it doesn't get used that much because it's such a hassle to carry around. I mainly use it for my lightning photos.

  11. What fun photos! I love the first two - that "glowing edge" special effect is wicked! - and the photo of the wooden door especially.

I'll be having a birthday soon and a tripod is one of the things I've asked for! Actually, we already have a tripod that went with our old video camera, but it doesn't fit my Kodak EasyShare camera so I'm going to see if I can get an adaptor thingy (pardon my haughty use of technical jargon, lol) that will make them compatible first. I really want to be able to take good nighttime shots with my little camera, because I think night shots like these are fantastic.
