Desert Cabin, 29 Palms, CA

This old cabin is adjacent to our place in 29 Palms. It sits on 5 acres, and for the four years we've been coming here, I've never seen it occupied. It looks like it's been painted many times and many colors over the years... to the point where it would be tough to tell what the primary color is! The newest thing on this desert cabin is the swamp cooler hanging on the window on the right.
Some day I hope to meet the owner(s) and see why they don't use it. Who knows, may be they no longer want it? It has two things that are highly coveted by desert cabin standards:  city supplied water and electricity. Many of the little homestead cabins out here have neither, and it's very expensive to get.
The 5-acre parcel is in a great location. An excellent view of Indian Cove and the Wonderland of Rocks. A short walk up the adjacent wash and you are in Joshua Tree National Park. Here's what it looks like.
I just happened to take this short walk last Friday when we had some truly amazing skies. Below is a 3-image panorama shot of the Wonderland of Rocks in Joshua Tree National Park. Who wouldn't like to have this view out their cabin window??

  13. Amazing views of nature's beauties surrounding the cabin. No doubt there is a good story behind the vacant cabin - and quite a history too.

  15. Stunning photos - love the little cabin. You should look up the tax records and see who owns the cabin - would be interesting to find out who did all that work and got in water and electricity and then didn't use it. Love the view! Oh the swamp coolers - loved those in the desert.

  16. Wonderful skies indeed. Not the most salubrious dwelling but I suppose it's all about location, location, location.

  22. Gosh, you get the most amazing shots of the desert. That little cabin is sitting on a nice piece of property. I'd snap it up in a heartbeat if I could!

  23. I want that panorama shot on my wall .... even if I live in Florida most of the time. So beautiful.

Somebody must be there sometimes in that cabin, since they've recently added the swamp cooler. When we spent the winter in your town (most of the time in JTNP) we were quite fascinated by the desert shacks like this one. It's a sort of phenomenon we've certainly never seen anywhere else but between 29 Palms and the Salton Sea. I loved it. (Not enough boatable water, or else we would have been happy there forever. Maybe even in a shack.;>))

  26. That landscape is stunningly, hauntingly beautiful. I second what Uppal wrote - your photos are mesmerizing, and so is the scenery you photograph! And those skies above the cabin - I couldn't really focus on the cabin, I was so distracted by that magnificent cloud, those lovely sunbeams, that magical lighting! But then I came back to earth and noticed the sign on the cabin. Reckon "Kern" is the name of the owner? Maybe you could leave them a note, tell them you'd like first refusal should they be interested in selling. Or leasing. :-)
