Circular Pathway to Inner Peace (??)

A couple of weeks ago I was driving my Jeep around a fairly remote piece of desert with the goal of photographing some homestead cabins. Here's one I came across that I like alot.

Another view. This little cabin is pretty typical of what people used to build to improve their 5-acre lot and quality for a homestead. No idea why they chose pink for the exterior wall color, but it adds to the mystery all these years later!

Here it is in b&w. I can never decide which I like better... b&w seems ideally suited for desert photography, but on the other hand, the colors can be great. I'd be curious to know which you prefer.

As the sun was setting, I found myself in a more remote area on a very questionable dirt road. I nearly ran over this rock pathway with the Jeep! A very strange location... no cabins around for miles; totally in the middle of nowhere. I decided to stop, get out the tripod, and take a few sky shots.
May be someone can enlighten me as to the purpose of this path? I'm guessing it's meditative in nature.

Beautiful desert skies, dirt roads, and vistas that go on forever. What could be better?? Linking to Skywatch Friday. Click on the link to check out great skies from around the world!!

  3. The magic of (sun) light! Great pics! Hard to decide which is best.
No clue about the circular arrangement of stones.

  4. It looks like a labyrinth. Love both version of the cabin in color and black and white. Gorgeous sky shots!

  5. I love those sky shots. BTW,the Black and White suit that old cabin perfectly.

  6. I think both the B&W and color are great for different reasons. The stones are certainly mysterious. Somebody went to a lot of work. Great shots and I love your spirit of exploration.

  7. Love the wispy clouds in the sky. The round circles look like a meditation circle of some sort. Why someone built it out there is a question. Maybe there is some significance in the location like the land there is considered "spiritual" or "sacred". I like the colour photos of the little cabin.

  9. stunning shots!
stone circles mostly made at magical places i think this looks like a helix and you can walk in it in a meditative way (difficult to explain in english, sorry)

  10. The sun casts a magical glow, breathtaking photos. I remember seeing a circle like this in Medora, North Dakota, on top of a bluff. There had been a powwow nearby. I was told the circle was sacred and that it should be respected, not to step inside the circle. That's all I remember and I am not sure if my memory can be trusted as that was several years ago.

  14. Who knows what they were thinking, most likely stoned at the time. You think Pink is odd then you need to see the houses over here. Mine is blue

  16. Usually I prefer color but on the house I really like the B&W! The last three sunset shots are my favorite..The circle looks like a zen garden circle.. Happy Friday, have a great weekend!

  18. The stone arrangement looks like something someone would photograph from the air and call it an alien landing. That old shack is really interesting. Great shots.

  19. My question is - how did that many large stones get to that location? I looked at the ground in your other photos and didn't see a lot of large stones on the ground. Could be that the photos just didn't show areas with bigger stones. Are that size stones common in that area of the desert? This looks like a meditative spiral and should be respected, not belittled with snide remarks about the spiral maker. Respect should be for the "builder" also - for the effort put forth in such an isolated area - a work of love and wonder, no doubt.

  20. So very beautiful out there, with just enough man made distractions to add some spice. That has to have been some kind of Zen meditation circle. I hope that whoever made it had lots of water on hand ... Not a good location to get too blissed out.

I definitely prefer the color pics of the homestead 'cabin'. It's a generational thing I'm sure as I still remember when all pictures were black and white and how tecnhnicolor seemed a miracle. (Ask you mom. Or Paul Simon.;))))

  25. Super pictures. Black and white is always more dramatic, but color adds another dimension. In other words, neither is better. Both are perfect. Now I have a headache.

  26. I think for this one shot- I like the color better, but I can't say why..most of the time I like how dramatic black and white is. The stone circles- Tex is right I think, a labyrinth.. some one was meditating there. It made a beautiful shot whatever was going on.

  30. The circular rocks sort of remind me of Fibonacci’s Ratio. So cool! Love the moodiness of the black and white.

  31. I too at times am torn between showing a photo in color or black and white. I usually wind up posting both. Wonderful images of a wonderful area.

  32. I prefer the coloured version of the cabin. The b&w shot looks rather creepy. Love the last photo best.
