Small Town Carnival

We dropped by the "Pioneer Days" carnival in 29 Palms weekend before last with my granddaughter. I enjoyed the feeling of a small town carnival, and also how it reflects the people and activities in and around the area. For example, the 29 Palms Marine Base is the largest in the world. Knowing that, I was still surprised to see an "Explosive Ordinance Disposal" display at the carnival. Really? Seems odd to me, with all the little kids running around. Not sure you would see this anywhere else outside of 29 Palms!!

I wasn't surprised to see a good turnout of marines from the local base. Without the marine base, I'm not sure 29 Palms would even exist! Is it just me, or do these soldiers look really young??

This one baffled me. I'm skeptical that a free quick test can tell me whether or not I am going to Heaven. Seems like it should take a little more thought than that! And the sign inside the trailer (What is bigger than god? Worse than the devil? The dead eat it, and if we eat it, we'll die!) was pretty weird.
I decided... probably best to skip the free test, although it probably would have been fascinating to talk with this gentleman!

Mild temperatures under beautiful skies.
What could be better than a small town carnival?

Linking with Skywatch Friday. Click on the link to check out great skies from around the world.
Thanks for stopping by!!

  5. Those Marines look sharp. The relgious nut? Run don't walk is my advice especially ones that can't get the spacing of letters right in their sign.

  12. If it weren't for the Pokemon cuddly toys, I'd have thought that was a shot of Marines at a fairground in the 1950's!
Loved the sky shot and would give the slide a go for sure!

  13. Yes I heard about 20 Palms. Great to have a small town carnival!
Reacting to your comment on the building at the train station in Old Town Sacramento - wow, your eyes are sharp! Or, have you been there, that you see those small details? I have never tried to open that door, but I've seen the markings on the wall that a staircase have been there:)

  15. Love that sky. Small town carnivals are always fun. Our town has one in August and the smaller town next to us has a 1 day fair that I always enjoy.

  17. It looks like fun. With a large military presence as well as a lot of religious presence, my city has an interesting mix like what you show.

  18. On our very first long RV journey after retirement, we stayed for three months in a Twenty-Nine Palms RV Park -- our first visit to Joshua Tree -- and as I've already told you we loved the Park so much we kept extending our stay. So of course we bought groceries and shopped a bit in this funny little town. Our first time around a place so centered on the Military -- it was interesting to us and quite a learning experience. But we loved it -- the joy of first realizing that we could really stay someplace as long as we wanted to -- that we weren't on any kind of schedule at all. No better place to discover that magic than Joshua Tree. (While having the benefits of electricity, hot showers in our RV, a swimming pool in the RV park -- and groceries and other necessities close at hand -- made possible by staying in this funny little town. Thanks for the memories!!!
