I've hiked all over White Tank Campground in Joshua Tree National Park in the past, but I've never been here at night to try my hand at Milky Way photography. So this post finds me wandering around White Tank on a hot summer afternoon (6/28/25), hoping to be able to line up the arch of the Milky Way in the night sky with some of the incredible rock formations in the area. Goal #2 is to capture some nice sky photos as the sun sets over White Tank.

Not too late a night for the Milky Way. (I seem to recall some 2 and 3 AMs, so 11 PM isn't really all that late.) Stunning.

I'm not used to seeing something like a table in your first photo. The Milky Way is gorgeous.

ReplyDeleteAgain, thanks for the beautiful pictures. The 'streaks' were the first things to hit me in the Milky WAy. Never seen that before. But then that is a beautiful camp ground, unique to say the least. I have never heard of monzogranite boulders, but they sure are impressive. Makes me sad I missed places you show when we traveled in the area. The pictures help make up for our loss. Thanks.. From our back yard, awaiting our next trip which will be to Florida.

ReplyDeleteSuper photo of the Milky Way with the meteors. Why are the rocks so rounded? OK, I looked it up And found a very informative young lady on youtube explaining the origin of monzogranite boulders. Wow!
ReplyDeletePeter, another very successful evening amongst the desert rocks with a lovely sunset and magical Milky Way. In the final image, the 'whale/dolphin' is stretching its neck to enjoy the vista more fully.
