Huntington Beach Pier a Night

I had a dinner meeting in Huntington Beach last month, so a nice opportunity to toss camera bag and tripod in the car and take a few photos after dinner. The above shot was taken from the parking lot just after sunset.
View north from the pier. The lifeguard towers are not staffed during the winter.

Another view looking north from up atop the pier.

A 1.3 second exposure, so the people walking look a little "ghostly" (ISO 400, f/16).

And the view under the pier.  Thirty-second exposure to blur the water (ISO 400, f/9).
Up on top, and looking north again...

And looking south. The lights follow Pacific Coast Highway.

Side note:  Does anyone notice that when they upload their photos on Blogger it changes the exposure? All my images are much light than the originals. The shot under the pier is dark and moody, but washed out here on Blogger. Very frustrating.

  1. Great pics but your comment about blogger is a real headscratcher. I don't use blogger any more except to set up the Skywatch Friday meme and I've never noticed what you are talking about it but I'll check it out.

  5. Really nice night shots and you see now were wally-e get her head from. Splendid colors. I also love the volley beach nets, it gives a kind of mysterious look and space grid to the beach. Well done.

  6. I can imagine the first image blown up to massive proportions on a hotel wall. And in the last couple of photos the aliens have landed - metal eyes and a mouth having a good look around!

  7. Wow, these are lovely. The lights at night are beautiful, looks like they are twinkling like stars.. The pier looks neat.. I have heard other bloggers mention their photos look different when posting them on the blogs.. Have a happy weekend!

  9. HB sure had changed a lot in the last 50 years. Great images. I haven't noticed what you said. My problem is I cannot access my YouTube channel through Blogger.

  11. some of these are very 'other worldly'. really like the under pier shot.

as for blogger changing your photos, i'm guessing that you still have 'auto enhance' enabled (when google rolled it out, they made it 'automatic' and you have to turn it off). you have to access it through google+ settings. there's an auto enhance and an auto awesome feature, too (the 'awesome' one will create a moving slideshow from photos you post that were taken in succession.) both of these make the assumption that google knows what to do with your photos better than you do. *sigh* :) hope this helps!

  17. Wow, I'm so used to seeing desert photos here, when I saw the ocean I had to double check to make sure I was on the right blog! :-) Speaking of deserts, I love scenes of deserted places normally teeming with crowds (perhaps because of their evocative, haunting atmospheres or maybe because I love solitude and detest crowds!), and these certainly fit the bill. My favorite is the one beneath the pier - so other-worldly! And my other favorite is the one just beneath it - love the lighting and colors of it.

I hadn't noticed Blogger fussing with my photo exposures, but I just learned something from TexWisGirl's comment, and am off to check my settings!

  18. Hi S P & P, A really neat post here. Like earlier commenter Afanja said, I can't really pick out a favorite ... they are all cool. Perhaps the 3rd one ... the empty beach ... all the nets ... fascinating. Thanks for sharing these. John

  19. Really nice! As a total photo amateur (I.e. Dunce) I don't notice what a pro does. I am just here to admire. I love quiet beaches, but it has been a very long time since I've been on one at night.

  20. Nice shots - long exposures at night are often a way to get some really good images. Like these!

  22. Yes, I've had the same problem uploading to blogger. I upload to Flickr now, which to my knowledge doesn't compress your files. Then, I cut and paste the link into blogger. Give it a try. Love the starbursts on the lights!
