  4. So pretty! I love the brilliant illumination of the setting sun behind the... mountains? Hills? Dirt pile? LOL - it's hard to get a sense of scale! But mostly I love that feisty little splash of hot orangey-pink set against that turquoise sky. Beautiful, and so restful to the eyes.

  8. Got enough color in that photo? Wonderful. The desert always does produce the greatest sunsets.

  9. I love the colors and the perspective.

When I started with ND filters, I went with 2 stop and 4 stop and found it wasn't enough. I'd suggest starting with 10 stop and filling in with lower stops later. With 10 stop, I get exposures between 1 and 4 minutes depending on the amount of light. I'm still learning how to estimate the exposure time.

  21. Fabulous sunset. Woody's comment implies you used a time exposure with an ND filter (which I had to google). True? Would love it if you'd share your technique on this shot. It's all about getting schooling from fellow bloggers.

    1. I didn't use a Neutral Density filter for this shot. I had seen a FANTASTIC shot Woody took using a ND filter, so he was giving me advice on which filter to buy (please check out his blog... it's an incredible photo). My photo is a 3 image HDR shot, combined in Photoshop, with a little editing. We were driving over a pass, having left Rhyolite NV, and just past sunset dropping down into Death Valley. The sky just lit up these incredible colors. Pulled over, set up my tripod, and clicked away. F10, 1/2 sec exposure, ISO 200, 25mm focal length.
