Desert Dust Devil

According to Wikipedia, a dust devil is a strong, well formed whirlwind ranging from small (a foot or two wide and 6' tall) to large (more than 30' wide and 3000' tall). The primary vertical motion is upward, and they are only rarely strong enough to pose a threat to people or property. As I was looking out in the direction of Coyote Dry Lake in Joshua Tree last weekend, I noticed this dust level form and grow and then disappear, all in about 5-10 minutes time. Pretty impressive!

  1. I remember watching Dust Devils form out on the dry lake bed just beyond Calico Ghost town years ago while dirt bike riding. They are fascinating or I am easy to amuse, maybe both!
    Great captures of this one!

  4. I've witnessed many dust devils in the desert, even drove through them on a dry lake bed just because. But I have never seen one as big as your large example.

  5. Wow, just like a water spout - only with less humidity! :-) I've seen a few of these, mostly in NM and west TX, but never any as impressive as this one you captured! Talk about being in the right place at the right time - your vantage point was perfect for these captures! Great series!

  12. That is freaky and cool all at the same time. One of those things that are neat to see from a distance, but sure wouldn't want to be caught in its path. Thanks for visiting.

  13. That is amazing. When we first retired to the desert [and lived there for nearly a decade] ---we saw a lot of these. Sometimes the dust blew so badly the interstate was shut down. Loved this phenomenon you've managed to capture.
