Halloween Moon!

A perfect night for trick-or-treating! Mild temperatures, a nearly full-moon, and lots of ghosts and goblins out searching for candy. I had fun taking my 5 year old granddaughter (and for a while, my daughter and grandson in a stroller) around the neighborhood. My granddaughter is at such a fun age... really excited, but at the same time, just a little scared to walk up to some of the houses with scary decorations.
My granddaughter (left), daughter, and grandson (stroller) off to find our first house for a trick-or-treat visit.

Very first house of the evening. My granddaughter looks a little concerned... "what am I supposed to say again, Grandpa??" Oh yes, trick-or-treat!!

A pretty Halloween moon was visible most of the night. I shot all these photos with a fisheye lens. No tripod, no flash. Set the ISO high (3200) and clicked away! DSLR cameras are so amazing!!

Hmmm... do I dare go up those stairs???

Yikes!! If I can just get by this zombie while I hold tight to grandpa's hand!!!

Halloween moon!

Joshua Tree moon.

Are you a fan of old 1950's sci fi? My granddaughter likes to watch this one with me, especially when we are out at the desert. The movie is called Them!, and it's about radioactive fallout from testing atomic bombs in the desert causing some kind of genetic mutation resulting in giant ants. The movie kicks off with a little girl (close in age to my granddaughter) found wandering among the joshua trees in a state of shock after her family is attacked by giant ants. It looks like it was filmed locally, perhaps in the Joshua Tree area. We watched it earlier this week to get in the mood for Halloween, and I couldn't resist taking this photo of the TV screen using my iPhone. Fun stuff! If you celebrate Halloween, I hope you had a good one!!

  6. Great photos and yes I remember Them! I grew up in Oak Ridge, Tn (where they made the bomb for Hiroshima) and I watched all movies about fallout from the 50's.

  13. Really great story ;-) I know a film about a giant spider, this film is in black and white too!
In Germany we celebrate Halloween not so much, but I like it!

  14. There were two good sci fi movies made at that time--- THEM with James Whitmore and James Arness. Also THE THING (FROM ANOTHER WORLD) with James Arness as the alien! My faves of that type. Anyway--- you have made these delightful and unusual images so much more than most people would have. Wonderful pictures!

  15. I didn't realise that the skeletons and witches outside people's front doors were designed to keep children away. Must invest in some for next year! (I'm only joking, small ghosties always welcome at my door).

  17. I have always a little trouble with fish eye photo's but your grandchildren looks wonderful. Despite heavy pushing from commercial parties Halloween is not a thing that lives in the Netherlands. Perhaps in the future but I am to old to change my mind in this case.

  18. My grandchildren also trick-or-treated in our neighborhood. The next day the two girls walked around the block with me in daylight commenting on all the 'bones' (skeletons) as decorations. The younger one, just three years old, was very upset that we were not doing a repeat of trick or treat and that there was no 'yummy' candy to be found.

  22. In this way Halloween is cute. And that kids are scared is not a bad thing - they still have that inbuilt feeling (what adults have lost) when something is not quite right! That Joshua Tree moon is amazing! Thanks so much for being so faithful in sending a comment each week - sorry, last weekend I was in the throws of cleaning my house for 4 overnight guests, so blogging was put on hold for about a week. Have a great weekend!

  24. Oh my gosh! Them was so good!! I watched it a dozen times when I was young. The scene of the little girl wandering around saying "them" was so iconic.

  27. What fun - our kids are all gone and not in the local area, so we just hand out candy these days.

  28. Our 5 year old granddaughter and the 18 month old little brother went out this year, their FIRST time, too! The 5 year old loved it. Her brother came in the front door and collapsed, asleep, in the hallway! He was exhausted!!!

  29. These Halloween pictures, in mood, are spectacular. I tried to take some pictures of the moon rising tonight with my iPhone SE - fail! I asked my husband, who was a big monster movie fan, if he had ever seen "Them"-this is one he hadn't seen.

  33. Wonderful... a fun night with three generations of family. It doesn't get any better than that.
I love the movie Them! Saw it when it first came out in 1950s. I now have it on DVD. Some great actors in it. James Whitmore, Edmund Gwenn and James Arness.

  39. Peter,

This is my third attempt to leave a comment. Blogger is giving me a hard time. lol Anywho, I love your photos! The fisheye lens really adds to the mood of Halloween night and capturing the moon in the evening sky is exceptional. My favorite is the second pix from the bottom (scary decorations, trick or treators on step, and moon overhead). Thanks for sharing!

  41. Is this the blog debut of your grandson? How lovely to look forward to sharing the beauty of your area with another little one -- I've enjoyed your adventures with big sister (and only wish I'd had a digital camera when our grands were that age!)
Stunning pictures of the beautiful sky/moon and scary Halloween decorations (no wonder you had to hold your granddaughter's hand.)

  42. What a great time you had (and fantastic pics may I add) I love that you are making memories with your granddaughter. My son used to love Halloween when he was that age. One year he told women who handed out the treats "gracias senora" I loved it. The mysteries of autism.
