Snowmageddon 2019

Dang, we just missed it! Every once in a while we get snow flakes falling at our desert house, but it never sticks to the ground. That is, until last Monday night (2/18). Locals have been referring to it as "snowmageddon 2019" and people will remember it for a long time to come. Even at lower elevations in 29 Palms there was snow. Here's a photo my neighbor took on our property on Tuesday AM. The old pickup truck is "yard art", as are the two vintage water tanks.
We missed it by a day! We had to leave the desert and drive home on Monday, so no snow photos for me! The higher elevations in Joshua Tree got significant snow, local roads were closed, and (yes, hard to believe) the schools in the high desert were closed Tuesday for a snow day!!

I did manage to get out to the desert earlier this week for a hike with a couple friends. Almost a week after the snow, on a blue-sky sunny day with highs getting close to 70 there were still patches of snow left on the ground!

And below, the three of us under an arched Joshua tree (I'm on the right). Photo credit to a random hiker who just happened to be walking by at the right time.

This cloud appears to be lost!

A little editing fun to make this red barrel cactus really stand out!

Gorgeous views to the north from this point on the trail. It's called Boy Scout Trail, and I hiked it once before with Cousin Scott here. I love this hike because I can hike from deep in the park all the way back to the house. Our neighbor dropped us off, and away we went. Also, it's all flat or downhill going this direction, so a fairly easy hike.

Pat (unsuccessfully) trying to clear the trail!

Nothing better at the end of a long hike than thick steaks on the BBQ, great weather, and a nice view!

  1. Joshua Tree is a beautiful place!

And here that amount of snow we'd refer to as a dusting.

  2. Despite snowmageddon, desert skies are gorgeous and save a steak for me please

  3. Beautiful blue skies! As for snow, it is challenging for those wanting to cross the Sierra on I80. I've never known it to be closed this often due to snow.

  4. I like the artistically rendered red cactus and, of course, the lost little cloud. They each in their own way seem like a great way to start a children’s story. :)

  5. Dang it! It might be years before you get another chance at a snowmaggedon. And yard art? A likely story...

  6. SORRY you missed it!! Great that you have a capture from your neighbor:) And that you could hike when patches of snow were still laying on the ground! Was Patrick also part of the group?
Can't remember if I wrote on your blog or emailed. Changed some things at Firefox last week, and typed in to allow exceptions for people I email very week.

  13. Certainly not something you see everyday.... I remember some snow falling outside our balcony door at an apartment in Laguna Niguel many years ago. It didn't last, but it was certainly unexpected.

  19. Must be very special to see snow in your desert region.
Climate and weather do strange things lately. We had some days with temperatures of 18ºC this week. A year ago people were skating overhere on March 3.

  26. The snow seem like an unusual event for the desert. Climate change is already begun so we never know what to expect these days. The BBQ is a great ending for the day.
    Have a wonderful weekend.

  27. Thank you for bringing us along on your hikes. I enjoyed the B&W except for the red cactus. It really stood out. And, at the end of the day a wonderful sunset. My mouth is watering for those steaks now.

  35. We had our 1/2" snowmaggeden here this morning. I am not going far today. I love your Boy Scout Trail. Downhill all the way, suits me. Our Turkey Mountain has a trail that goes downhill for almost two miles. I love it. It makes me feel like a real runner.
