Forgotten Files

Do you ever lose track of photos? You forget you took them, they sit in files on your computer or languish on a memory card? I'm guessing it's a common problem. I've tried to be disciplined, meaning I review and edit all my photos from one outing before moving on to the next. No skipping around. Always working from old to new. And in general, always posting older photos from older hikes and outings before moving on to the more recent.

Well, the wheels started coming off the bus about a year ago. There were photos from hikes that I was so anxious to share that I just had to skip the older stuff and go strait to the more recent (thinking I'll go back later and finish reviewing/editing/posting the older stuff). Let me tell you, it leads to chaos! Now I have a bunch of hikes that I've never posted. Some of the photos have been reviewed and edited, but many have not. It's a mess.
Case in point: "Diamond Solstice" hike, July 7, 2018. The original post is here. I ended up pulling out a few of my favorite shots for the post, but never finished going through all the photos I took during the hike. A common problem. A couple weeks ago I "discovered" these lost files, and darn if there aren't some good sky shots that almost never saw the light of day! The photo above was taken while standing on Keys Ranch Road in Joshua Tree National Park looking east. But the real drama was looking west toward the sunset.

The very last sliver of light being enjoyed by a couple who have climbed up on top of their camper van to enjoy the show!

Now it's time to start searching through old file folders and memory cards to discover other forgotten files that deserve to see the light of day!!

Thanks for stopping by!!

  5. Wow I love your photos, especially the top one and the 2nd from the bottom. I am always impressed by those who have their photos organized (digital or otherwise). I'm afraid my photo storage is very disorganized.

  6. Yeah, gold (sunsets) in your archives, you wouldn't want to waste that!
Ever I saw last week how you renovated the cabin, I think there's a larger story (a book) in it! Anyone in your family who would want to pick up the tread?
    Have a great weekend!

  9. This is kind of Lazarus post where the long dead photos come to life. I'm glad you brought them back, they are spectacular.

I am hopelessly disorganized so I upload all my pics up to Flickr and tag them there. That works okay with pics from my cameras, but I take many photos with my phone and they upload automatically so I am constantly going back and tagging. At least I know where they are, I think.

  10. I have a similar problem. So many files that my iCloud is full of unsorted pictures. Love your desert shots . Thanks for sharing

  11. Incredible shots.

I have the same problems; I think I take more photos than necessary.

    Worth a Thousand Words

  15. Nice find!!! I wander through my old files quite often-- I also back up at least once a month. Sometimes I find an old shot that I can see in a whole new way. That really works for me just as well as a new shot--- it's discovery either way.

  16. Great sky shots indeed and it is always nice to wander around in the old and forgotten shots unless so as in my case you have a rotten backup hard disk or 2 and change to much between mac and windows. (hobby and work)

  19. So beautiful post
I do not check so much on my own photos anymore they are added to a folder with a certain explanation of them
They may end up later on my blog for viewing
When I photographed by analogy and with a slide film, they checked more on their pictures in the album or on canvas when you were visited by friends and family

  20. I think most of us know the problem, at least I do. But most of the time it isn't a real problem. And what is more ... when your rediscover them, that can be a nice surprise. Like these photos for instance, thanks or finding them back and sharing them. :-)

  21. These photos are extraordinary. Like a part of a dream.

  22. My favorite is the photograph with the cacti, road and sunset; but to tell you the truth, each image stands on it's own and are all excellent in my opinion.

  23. The wheels are completely off my bus! There is something about the computer that cramps my organizational style and my photos are stored in whatever is the computer terminology for “one big messy box”! These that you just posted — wow! what a sunset.

  24. I just finished suggesting Organization is over rated on another blog. I'll repeat it here. You still blew our minds with these shots, regardless of when you took them.

    Awesome, sir!

Have a nice weekend full of photo moments!

  26. It's always a surprise when you find photos that you forgot about. The skies are stunning, beautiful and very impressive. Glad you gave them light so we could see and admire them.
    Have a wonderful weekend.

  27. I love sky photos that are full of big beautiful clouds. Clouds always make a sunset more glorious.
I have the same problem with photos getting overlooked ever since Google changed from the Picasa format to it's new "Google Photos" download. The new format is all squished together and unless I specifically put the photos in an album they are not names by occasion. Cell phone photos and camera photos get downloaded to the same format and it gets confusing. Since I use a google blog I have to use Google Photos, so I have learned to deal with it, but I miss their old Picasa format which I felt was easier and more organized!

  28. Those skies are so gorgeous! I've been going through photos too. I really don't want to keep them all, but it's hard to decide which ones to keep.

    ReplyDelete
  29. How can you forget sunsets like that? But yes, how do you keep track? (I have over 8,000 pictures on my iPhone and few are as beautiful as yours.) Happy you rediscovered them.

  30. There are times I misplaced the photos and there are files that I have forgotten for some reasons. I am glad you recovered these stunning sunset photos.

  31. Oh, I love your Forgotten Files !

  35. Wow ! these are gorgeous skies ! I have a folder where I put all skies in !

  36. So beautiful Peter. I wish my best pictures were half as great as your forgotten ones! Yes, at the best of times it is easy to lose track and get behind on sorting ...the joy and the sorrow of digital photography is the same thing.

  37. How lucky we are that these should see the light of day. Now get organized, and bring us some more beauty, will ya?

  38. I do the very same thing but like all above I'm happy you found these gorgeous skies for us to enjoy 💛
