Full Bony Moon

Not sure why full moons have so many names. Has this always been the case? Anyway, a quick Google search for "February full moon names 2020" gives you this:

  • Full Snow Moon
  • Full Hunger Moon
  • Full Storm Moon
  • Full Candles Moon
  • Full Wolf Moon (more often celebrated during January)
  • Full Trappers Moon
  • Full Bony Moon
I'm guessing this is not even a complete list. No snow out in my neck of the woods, so I'm going with "Full Bony Moon". Sounds kind of weird and creepy, but interesting. I wasn't able to be out in the desert for the recent Full Bony Moon, so I walked up into our local hills and took these. It was wonderful sky watching because the sun was setting just as the moon was rising. If I didn't like one view, all I had to do was turn around!
Enjoy!!

A raven, I think

  4. Those last two took me to Halloween. LOL Yes there is something about that Full Moon. I am reading a lot of Westerns lately, they use the 'Rustler's moon.'
There is definitely beauty in that full moon. Of course your camera's eye brings them in closer.

  5. Love that third photo as it looks so spooky silhouetted like that - it lives up to the Bony Moon label!

  6. These are wonderful. I love all the different names for the moon. I am amused by all the names that just say "Native American" as if all such people were the same.

  19. That's the first I've heard of the moon having so many names, we saw it though but it was like first thing in the morning when it was high in the sky around 7am

  20. My favorite is your 3rd moon - so filled with mood! Though I also like the two last, with the night blue sky - reminiscent of how I would do a sky in my paintings!
    Have a great weekend! Jesh

  29. So beautiful. I can never get any context for the moon here in Florida. It’s just up there in the big dark sky, nary a tree nor branch and hardly a cloud.

  30. The "bony" fingers of the trees adds such a creepy feeling to these pictures. Perfect for the "Bony" Moon. And I agree with you that these names for the moon seem to be a recent invention. Or maybe I have been asleep at the wheel for several decades!
