Rocky Photo Frames

I wish I could give credit to the fellow blogger that gave me the idea for this post, but my memory fails. I can't even recall the exact photos, but I do recall being impressed by photos which were framed using natural surroundings. And that person's creativity sparked the idea for this post. Amazing how the human mind works!

I'm always crawling in and around caves and alcoves while out hiking in Joshua Tree. Some are cramped, but some give impressive views looking out, and I've always liked the way the rocks can provide natural framing. With a wide angle lens, I can usually pull in the sides of the alcove, which provides a sort of rocky photo frame.

Sometimes the rocky frame itself can prove interesting. Anyone else see a birds head?

This rocky frame provides the silhouette of a bird!

This large shelter, which I came across on a recent hike, appears to have a large grinding stone at the entrance. I love finding stuff like this!

Linking with Skywatch Friday.

Thanks for stopping by. Stay safe & stay healthy!

  1. Hello,

These are all beautifully framed! I can not pick a favorite, I love them all. Great series and post. Take care, enjoy your day! Have a happy weekend ahead!

  2. Superb, The second to last one is the one I love. The outline of the bird looks to have a head with an eye looking at you in the distance

  3. Once again you've made me homesick and envious at the same time. This is such a great idea. I used to do this kind of thing all the time, especially when I was learning PhotoShop a million years ago. Anyway, another great job. I think I'm just going to plan to spend my weekend catching up on all the recent posts I've missed. Hope you're all well and safe.

  6. You are truly amazing crawling into those snake and spider dens to get great photos. If it were me, I'd get bitten and die and your granddaugher's great grand kids would find my remains a hundred years from now.
I love your photos. I try and use trees or other things to frame my pics when I can. I think it does make a difference.

    1. Hi Amy. Not often, but I've seen a few. My biggest fear is stepping on one (they blend in very well). Hiking with a walking stick and rustling the bushes in front of you can be very helpful!

  14. As usual, SUPER pictures. The framing reminds me of John Ford's The Searchers.

  23. What awesome frames you found to highlight that scenery. (I didn't really see a bird, by the way, but rather, a cat's head. Ah, the power of imagination.)

  29. Oh I love those. There is a theory, which was originally applied to landscape paintings, that scenes which we find pleasing are either sanctuaries or lookouts. In other words places where we feel safe from harm or from which we can see danger approaching - all a hangover from our deep past. These views from caves are fine examples.

  30. Great to hear from you on my blog. Big hugs from Canada for Lilly with the two ells! Funny, because Shane and Heather's baby's full name is Lillian! She is a bright little girl. We just saw her again yesterday. She is now nine weeks old and is really starting to take notice of things. I'll be sure to look through some of your recent posts. All the best.

  33. These are all fantastic shots. I'd have a very hard time picking a favorite. I did see the bird's head and I loved the one shaped like a bird. The views are amazing.

  34. Yes I've crawled into many mines and things there. Once I threw in a rock and was rewarded by the sound of a rattle!

  36. Hello from a first time visitor to your blog and also a photo enthusiast. Natural framing is a great photo technique and what awesome frames you have selected. The bird head and body were interesting and amusing. Hope your area is not being threatened now. I also enjoyed a look at many of your earlier posts and was similarly in awe of such natural beauty to explore and photograph.

  40. It's fun to see all your alcove shots together. Simply stunning. They make me want to crawl into some caves too. But I'm chicken about snakes or spiders.

  42. Amazing photos. Absolutely perfect. And two bird shapes! (Yes, I see them both.). And this me a little bit of an idea of how it must feel to be inside a small cave looking out (the closest I’m ever likely to get). I love this.

  43. Hi Again and thanks for the comment on my recent blog post. Just a FYI that you, myself and others have been spammed by an obviously fake, Fr. Kevin Doran. My advice is to m it as spam and then delete completely so this unscrupulous person doesn't get any more attention than NOT warranted.
