Diagonal Sky

"There is nothing wrong with your computer screen. Do not attempt to adjust it. We are controlling transmission. We control the horizontal. We control the vertical. Sit quietly and we will control all that you see. You are about to participate in a great adventure. You are about to experience the awe and mystery of... desert skies!"
A heavily modified opening narration from "The Outer Limits", 1960

Does anyone else remember the "Control Voice" from The Outer Limits? I know I'm totally dating myself, but that's OK. When I was a kid watching this show, I thought it was pretty cool and a little spooky. I was having that same feeling wandering around the desert in the late afternoon not too long ago. I hadn't really seen diagonal clouds like this before, and it was a little disorienting!

I walked past howling coyote rock. Mr. Coyote appeared to be howling at the diagonal sky, which added to the ambience!

Looking behind me (opposite direction of the diagonal sky), the sky was still interesting, but not as dramatic.

Even in monotone, these V-shaped clouds look so dramatic! They are some of my favorite photos from this particular hike in Joshua Tree National Park.

Hiking past my old friend, "Rip Curl" rock.

Thanks for stopping by, and hoping you enjoyed these desert skies!
Until next time: Stay safe & stay healthy.

  1. That sky is incredible! And you had the presence of mind to take different angles of it:) Stunning captures:) Before I read about your "coyote" I thought it looked like a man with his dog, haha. Have a great weekend!

  2. I wonder how many people walk right past the howling rock and never see the coyote?

  3. Wow, beautiful and eerie ... enough to make a rock coyote howl! All just beautiful, I like the perfect triangle one so much. Interesting in monochrome too, especially to compare both versions.

  4. PS... Bill liked the last photo, (the black and white with no comparison photo) the best, he said the one I liked was “disturbing”....this is why we have trouble deciding which pictures to hang on our walls )).

  5. Interesting cloud formation. It's like a front was moving in or something. (Not that I understand weather at all.)

  7. I loved outer limits and all the spookiness of Rod Serling in the Twilight Zone. As usual, your skies today are breath-taking.

  9. Wonderful post, Peter. The combination of the diagonal sky and the beautiful lighted desert rocks is quite stunning. I can imagina you made kind of outer space relation.

  10. I'll date myself, too - yes I remember Outer Limits, although I didn't watch (because my parents didn't watch, and they controlled the horizontal, the vertical and everything else on our TV, too. But I do remember seeing the beginning of the show. It was up against Jackie Gleason, if I remember correctly, and they were big Gleason fans. Anyhoo....I never get tired of your pictures. That was an interesting sky. A front of some kind? I have no idea.

  11. I've never heard of the Outer Limits show. Maybe we didn't get it on our 2 channels when I was a kid but we did get the Twilight Zone. I can understand why you would feel a little spooked out in the wide open spaces with the sky such as it was. One day about a year ago we had a similar kind of thing in the sky but it didn't look quite as big living in the city. It spooked me too. You always find something very interesting to share. Take care and stay safe.

  16. Interesting cloud games in the sky, especially the diagonal cloud layer I find fascinating! Are the dark clouds just coming or going?
    Happy weekend and stay safe!

  17. Hello,
Beautiful sky captures and desert landscapes. I had to look at the howling coyote formation twice, but I do see it. My hubby likes to watch the reruns of Outer Limits. Great series! Enjoy your day, have a great weekend!

  24. Spooky sky! It reminded me of when the alien ships move in close in Independence Day! Or a Dr Who.

  25. Well done getting those photo's the sky's are amazing. I love how the sky disappears into the distance with the V shape cloud and how it is almost the same line as Rip curl rock. Brilliant

  26. The diagonal clouds really matche some of the slanty rock layers. Drama and diagonals galore. The desert is so surreal through your lens. Great safari. As always.

  35. I must be the same age as I was a Twilight Zone and Outer Limits fan as a child. Both shows were very real and very scary to me back then, but I loved them!
The cloud cover in these photos is very dramatic and, yes, I can see the coyote howling!

  39. Beautiful! There is already an otherworldly aspect to this place but the clouds add even more mystery. Totally an Outer Limits experience which can be seen in reruns haha for the very young.

    1. Thank you. My camera is old and very beat up. It's a Canon 5D Mark II, which had a release date of 2008. So in camera years, it's very old!! But I still love it. I use Photoshop for basic editing. My goal is always to get the colors and clarity as close to how I remember seeing it with my eyes as possible.

  42. I remember The Outer Limits. That narration always got me in the mood. Your landscape photos are stunning!

  43. Sorry - Outer Limits is not in my repertoire, but I could look at these pictures all day!

  44. I’ve got one word: WOW!
Had a chuckle over your memory of Outer Limits. Twilight Zone was another favorite which I used to watch when babysitting late at night and scare myself silly! The second view of the cloud formation feels just like a giant space ship is going overhead.

  45. As beautiful as it is... I´m just watching James Franco´s "127 hours" and it freaks me out, also thinking of how we went into scenes like that ourselves back then!
To safety, always... and to beauty.

  52. I was happy for you to "control" the horizontal and vertical on my PC screen to see these amazing cloud formations, Ric. And while I wasn't a regular viewer of The Outer Limits show, but Twilight Zone more so, here's some info on "the voice" done by Victor Herbert Perrin, a radio, film, and television actor who was a WI native and died in 1989 on July 4in CA of cancer.
