Big Skies Over Cleghorn Lakes

I last visited Cleghorn Lakes five years ago. Today I'm hiking with Mitch and Chris Clarke. Chris is a well known and respected desert environmental journalist. He hosts a podcast called 90 Miles From Needles: The Desert Protection Podcast. Please take a few minutes to go check it out!

Chris will be our guide today, taking us to some of the interesting washes that carve through this desolate stretch of the desert. This area doesn't get many visitors, which makes it all the more interesting.
Off we go! Look closely and you might be able to make out a light colored sandy area at the base of the mountains in about the middle of the photo. That's where our cars are parked. Back when I was young and dumb (a couple years ago😉) I would drive this road, not realizing what I was doing was illegal (there are no vehicles allowed in wilderness areas). In my defense, there were no signs or gates, and it's clear this road gets a lot of use, but ya, that doesn't make it right.

The thing I will remember most about this hike are the huge, open skies. We really got lucky with the beautiful cloud cover. All day long we were seeing shadows come and go as the clouds floated overhead.
Pincushion cactus (I think).

Interesting striations on the rock.

Cloud shadows.

One of may steep-sided washes carving through the area.

Mitch and Chris up ahead.

A splash of color in a drab landscape.

The hike back.

Thanks for stopping by!!

  1. Clouds in a desert are not an all that common experience, I would think. At least I remember mostly bright blue, cloudless skies in my brief trip to AZ.

  2. Your photos are lovely. I really like the clouds, they grace the beautiful blue sky in an artistic way.

  3. Perhaps because I was born and raised in a lush green area, I find the desert southwest so beautiful.

  4. You saw some beautiful country.
When I lived in New Mexico as a kid. There was occasionally a story about somebody driving their jeep in a wilderness area. If they got stuck and the Forest Service found out about it in the meantime they would make the owners high a team of horses to free the jeep and pull them out of the boundaries. But I think the wilderness areas rules were pretty well marked.

  14. There’s something powerful about revisiting a place with new awareness, good company, and skies so vast they seem to stretch time itself.

  20. We passed wide open desert like this between Vegas and Hatch, Utah yesterday. So many colors here, though! Especially through the Valley of Fire.

  29. A very interesting hike here, and that it is beautiful your photos prove it. The striations in rock could well be a fossil. There could well be animals here in this dry area. The skies are beautiful. Loved visiting your blog post. Wish you and your family a great weekend.

  31. Fascinating scenery. One can put their imagination to work and see objects or even animals in the shapes of the rocks, and the striations make me wonder what we are seeing, too.

  32. That is big wide open country, rugged and stark yet beautiful. So different than here, where the forests are dense in growth and you can't see far ahead.

  34. Marvelous photos! There should be signs and even a gate or some cones to let people know where they should turn around.

  35. To many it does look boring and stark, but those rock formations, striations, and the washouts all make for such an interesting landscape.
I'm glad also that you found a guide into an area that is not visited often. That makes it so more interesting!
    Those skies!
I wonder how it would all appear if photographed in infrared light spectrums.
    :)

  39. The skies are stunning -- and fortunate for desert hikers for sure! That poster for 90 miles... (and the subject matter) might just be enough to talk this old lady into getting into podcasts.
