A Winter Day at the Beach

I took my granddaughter and her two besties to the beach in late January (and just realizing I never posted any photos!). I remember thinking it should be really nice. The temperature was quite warm for January. I like winter beach days... no crowds, easy to find parking, and beach traffic is light. But as we headed down Beach Blvd. and got within about 1/4 mile of Pacific Coast Highway, my hopes for a "have-the-beach-all-to-ourselves" kind of day was shattered. Traffic was backed up for some reason, and when I finally got to PCH, traffic was at a standstill. I did a quick u-turn and pulled into the Huntington State Beach lot, and as I paid my $20 to park, I asked the lady what was going on. She chuckled and said something about a "trifecta": Huntington Beach Marathon, a vintage car show, and a surf competion. So much for our quiet winter day at the beach!
A gorgeous day at the beach (Huntington Beach pier in the background).

The vintage VW buses were fun to see. Most appeared to be renovated down to the tiniest detail. Beach Boys music was blasting out of one of the vans. It transported me back to my childhood, growing up in S CA in the 60's!

The girls walking down to the pier.

Catalina Island on the horizon.

As if the sunset wasn't enough of a show, the full moon was rising and putting on its own show in the opposite direction. It took me about 15 tries before capturing this seagull flying by under the moon!

Watching the sun drop behind Catalina Island. It turned out to be an amazing winter day at the beach, crowds and all, and one that I think the girls will remember for a long time!

Thanks for stopping by!

  3. Looks like a good day. At least with the marathon most of the crowd wasn't at the beach.

  9. Wow, that adventure seems amazing and wonderful. I enjoyed all the shots. I loved the one under the pier too! I've always wanted to see that!
I was in California in 1966. Too young too appreciate everything I was seeing back then on our cross country road trip in a 1965 Station Wagon.

  17. It looks like a fun day and I'm not sure I've ever had a bad beach day but then I live 1000 miles from most of them so don't get to have beach days very often.

  19. You’ve taken a beautiful series of sun, sea, sand, and those three teenage girls. It looks like it was a really fun day.

  20. That sounds nearly better than a quiet day, back to the olden times! And teaching the girls, too.

  23. I love the beach shots and all those VW buses lined up. I especially like your shot under the pier. That's a great one. Pacific coast sunset and a full moon at the same time. Perfect timing.

  24. Your photos are beautiful! It looks like the girls all had a great day. My AZ relatives love staying near Huntington Beach area to enjoy the beach. I am a "stay out of the sun" as I freckle ( and now age spot) but I love beachcombing for pretty shells.

  26. Such a fun outing!
The VW buses with Beach Boys tunes sound wonderfully nostalgic, and your beach shots captured the day so beautifully.

  27. This is SO different from my New York Stat world, especially in winter. $20 for winter parking on a beach? Yikes. But you got a lot for your money. What a fun car show, and those sunset photos were amazing. Of course, being on the Pacific, you get to see beach sunsets over water. Your granddaughter and her friends will cherish those pictures.

  35. How fortunate is your Grandaughter to have a Grandad to take her and friends to the beach. How wonderful that she is happy to be with you. A shaky start to and awesome day.

  36. I hadn't realized how much I miss the beach until I started going through my subscriptions to see what folks were up to these days. I'm used to waxing nostalgic about desert-y things when I visit Spare Parts, but was just as happy to see these wonderful photos of the coast. The last time I saw the Pacific Ocean was at Camp Pendleton at Christmastime nearly twenty years ago. Just as sunny, just as warm but almost empty except for a Santa-garbed surfer. Thank you for sharing shots of actual people doing people-things and having fun--something most of my own photography lacks due to my curmudgeonly nature.

    1. Thanks, and good to hear from you! Some changes along the coast during the past 20 years (especially in the Huntington Beach area), but Camp Pendleton hasn't changed.
