Desert Wildflowers

I was out hiking and jeeping in Joshua Tree last weekend, and a bit disappointed that I wasn't seeing more wildflowers. However, I got to the far south end of Geology Tour Road, and things changed dramatically! It's so interesting how the flowers can be very abundant in one desert area and totally missing in other areas.

I did my best to avoid stepping on flowers as I was hiking along in this remote area!

If you look really hard at the top center of the photo above, you will see a little line dropping down the distant mountain. That's the northern section of Geology Tour Road. Keep heading south, then do a bit of hiking, and you will end up here!

  8. They are so pretty. I'd guess there was a little shower of rain or a heavy dew in the area causing the flowers to bloom. Many years ago a friend of mine was employed by the BBC making a documentary about the desert and like you they couldn't find the flowers they'd hoped for. In the end they resorted to watering several patches of land and very soon they had the flowers they wanted and - I've seen the finished film - some clever camera work makes it look as though the whole desert is ablaze with flowers.

  9. Oh wow, thanks for taking us on that trip. I knew about the sudden bloom of wildflowers in the desert in Australia after a rain in spring but somehow never thought of the same thing happening in the U.S.
Your photos are great - you've been able to capture a spectacular combination of geologic features and colourful carpets of flowers. THanks again for sharing
