Watching the Sun Drop: Six Photos in 13 Minutes

Bumping along on a dirt road in Joshua Tree last Saturday (7/27/13), I liked the look of the sun dropping behind this cloud...
7:38 PM:  105mm, f14, 1/200sec, ISO 125
A few short minutes later, the sun was below the cloud, and I'm thinking, that's probably it for the night. Wife and I got in the car and drove down the road...
7:41PM; 105mm; f/14, 1/125sec; ISO 125
Six minutes later, things looked interesting. Stoped the car, lens change (70 - 200mm) and started shooting again...
7:47PM; 200mm; f/10; 1/100sec; ISO 125
Put on the 2x extender to get in even closer...
7:48PM; 400mm; f/10; 1/125sec; ISO 250
7:50PM; 400mm; f/10; 1/250sec; ISO 250
7:51PM; 400mm; f/8' 1/250sec; ISO 250

  3. Isn't it amazing how much - and how quickly - the sky can change during sunrises and sunsets? These are spectacular photos!

I have to admit, my Rebel takes such great photos on the "auto" setting that I've been very lazy about learning how to take photos using the manual settings. But one of the situations where "auto" lets me down is photos like these, of a rising or setting sun. I just end up with a big, undefined, hyper-glowy blob! So I was paying attention to the settings you shared on each photo - thanks for that. This winter when I have time, I must buckled down and study the digital photo books I bought along with my camera and stop relying on the "auto crutch!"

I must say, as glorious as every one of these are, my heart actually went into my throat when I saw the last one...

  4. This has happened to me more time than I care to confess to. I think the show is over, put the camera away and then the sky explodes with color. I like the first one best.

  13. Great shot. I often get my best sunset shots just after I think I've already taken the best of the evening.
