Majestic Desert Skies

Last week, I took you on an adventure to an area I call Majestic Wash. It turned out to be one of my favorite recent hikes. My photo count was up to 27 with that post, which is a lot (even for me!). But I still had my hike-back-to-the-Jeep photos, and there are some good ones, so I'll share those with you here. Kind of a "Majestic Wash Part II" post, with the focus being desert landscape and sky.

Here's one I didn't share last week. While hiking along Majestic Wash, I came across this unusual rock formation. Dinosaur teeth? Picket fence?? I'll let you decide. I think geologists would really enjoy hiking in this part of Joshua Tree National Park. OK, let's move on to landscapes and skies!

It took me a long time to hike back to the car. Blame it on these beautiful skies!

Done, and still just a bit of light in the sky for this last photo looking east from Highway 62.
Happy Trails, and thanks for stopping by!
Linking with Skywatch Friday.

  2. I'm no different in stopping to take a photo, 5th picture does it for me. I love the way the sun shines on the hills and the Uncertainty of what is behind them in the distance

  3. Wow, I would kill for even one of these shots.
We are going on a little outing to southwestern Oklahoma the week after next. It is kind of desert mountainous terrain and I am hopeful of getting some decent photographs.

  4. The sky really does almost speak in these photos... I see symbols and shapes in each one. That dome-shaped rock is interesting ... we’re the picket fence ones near it? That’s a whole homestead ... a geodesic dome home and a fenced garden? (Evidently, the skies aren’t the only thing that triggered my imagination today.). Beautiful post. I’m glad you weren’t in a hurry to get back down to the car. Thanks for sharing.

  5. The skies and jagged mountains make for some exciting photos. I did study geology many years ago but I've no idea what could cause those dinosaur teeth.

  6. Wow, this is a gorgeous area and you have captured it perfectly. I prefer to think those are dinosaur teeth :)

  7. This is a serie with some stunning shots again, Peter, great work!
There are some fine but striking scratch-like streaks almost horizontally across that round rock in pictures 6 and 7. Do you have any idea how they could have been caused?

    1. Thanks for your comment, Jan. Always appreciated! I'm not sure what causes some of the unusual erosion I see out in this area. I always assume rain (limited as it is) and wind play a big role. It would be fun to hike with a geologist some time. I'm sure I would learn a lot!

  11. Those images are stunning. I would so love to just go out there and look, but I don't think I'd enjoy the weather. Well, at this time of year it would be okay, but definitely not much closer to summer.

  12. I do enjoy how you do the land scape (hills/mts/ etc) but the rounded rock with caves or holes is fantastic. Love it.
Sherry & jack in a warm Florida finally!

  16. These are some of your very best (of the ones I've seen)! The time of day, the angle of the sun really elevates these shots to true works of art!

  17. #6&7 is my fav. Lovely (setting?) sun. And mighty fine cave (?). Add sleepingbag and you have a shelter for a night. Kinda looks like a alien skull.

    1. Thanks for your comment. If you are talking about the large "head" rock formation (photos 6 & 7), yes, that's a shallow cave or alcove (with two entrances that kind of look like eyes!).

  21. The comparisons between the color and monochromatic versions were great with such incredible cloud formations. The walk back was worth your showing these captures, but then it wasn’t us who had that hike.

  26. Love the colors of the one after the first black and white. That perfect straight row of stones, is it nature, or did someone build that? The skies are awesome on this trip, Peter!
